Urban exploration (often shortened as UE, urbex, and sometimes known as roof-and-tunnel hacking) is the exploration of manmade structures, usually abandoned ruins or hidden components of the manmade environment. Photography and historical interest/documentation are heavily featured in the hobby. Urban exploration may also be referred to as draining (when exploring drains) or urban caving (when exploring natural features in an urban setting).

Urban exploration is a broad activity with a diverse following that engage in the exploration of various types of structures. Some examples of the range of structures include:

• Abandoned Structures: These are the most common targets for urban explorers, including abandoned factories, hospitals, asylums, schools, and houses.
• Active or In-Use Buildings: Some explorers focus on exploring active or in-use buildings, which can include accessing rooftops, utility tunnels, and other off-limits areas.
• Underground Structures: This category includes a wide range of spaces, such as storm drains, sewers, subway tunnels, and abandoned subway stations.
• Construction Sites: These sites can offer a glimpse into the process of building and can be attractive due to their temporary and ever-changing nature.
• Transportation Infrastructure: This might include abandoned or active rail lines, bridges, and other transportation-related structures.
• Catacombs: Subterranean passageways for religious practice that may include burials or the housing of reliquaries.

The activity presents various risks, including both physical danger and, if done illegally and/or without permission, the possibility of arrest and punishment.
